[Português abaixo] The story of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, in Vence, France, is an impressive story of gratitude and love. When he needed to undergo cancer treatment, Matisse hired a young nurse, named Monique Bourgeois. She also ended up becoming his model. During World War II, they moved away, and when they met again, Monique had become a nun of the Order of Saint Dominic and had come to be called Sister Jacques-Marie. They then decided to build a chapel for the Dominican Convent. Matisse worked for four years in that chapel, which he considered his masterpiece.
The March challenge of the Arts Circuit of Atelier MVinhas was the reinterpretation of the stained glass window that is next to the altar of the Chapel. The main focus of my work was to highlight the difference between the opacity of the wall, which I chose to paint in gray with acrylic paint, and the transparency of the stained glass, in which I used watercolor and watercolor markers, outlining them with permanent markers.
In addition to the artistic challenge, I learned a lot from the history and images of the chapel, in addition to, during the process, reflecting on the meaning of the stained glass, which symbolizes the increase in spirituality. May we have stained glass in our soul, allowing the light to enter and form beautiful images in our hearts!
